“Have
Decorative Arts School, Will Travel." That, in a nutshell, describes
Artistic Adventures, a school that moves around the world to interesting
places and homes. For 2003, Artistic Adventures will take place at
Stonebrooke, a stately home located in Atlanta, Ga., in the desirable "Buckhead"
area. Instructor Susan K.Goans along with her team of instructors and
their apprentices will begin the adventure this spring
Stonebrooke
is located in an idyllic setting, nestled within the tree lined foliage of
the property, where the whisper of a babbling spring brook gives
this small estate a grandeur |
and vintage feel.
"The estate will become a canvas upon which each student will work,
developing their skills," Goans said. "This year, the project will
encompass a vast array of many different craftsmen teachers and their
artistry. From the exterior grounds to the interior surfaces, we will
unite our efforts to develop a mastery of design."
Artistic
Adventures' projects are characterized by classroom instruction, followed
by hands-on application and the challenge of |
working
on"real" surfaces as an apprentice. The educational program will take
place from March 17 through June 13. Weekly classes are available. For
decorative painters, classes include: Painting Techniques (apprenticeship
classes for the beginner and professional); Fresco Painting; and Mural
Painting. There are also Professional Drapery and Upholstery Classes. In
addition, there are Saturday seminars, including one that covers the
business of faux as well as others on landscape artistry, woodcarving and
wrought iron forging.
Among the decorative painting techniques that students will learn are:
Fresco Antiqua Inlay; Olde World Dimensional Relief; "Wet on Wet"
stenciling; Faux Embossed Leather, Surface Treatment; Flow Blue China;
Crown Molding and more.
"The hands-on apprenticeship based education gives the student a, unique
opportunity to learn, shoulder to shoulder with professionals," said Goans.
"They leave the school having gained experience and confidence by
developing specialized skills on location for a client project."
One of the
great advantages of this educational program is the ability to

work with Goans, who has more than 20 years of
experience in the decorative painting field. Not only has she done work
for some of the best-known designers in the country, but she also is the
author of 40 books and has developed painting tools which improve the
application of faux I finishes. She has made appearances on many of the
top home decorating television programs, including The Christopher Low
ell Show.
From
beginning to end, the project will be professionally documented by both
still photography and video production companies. Previous projects have
been featured in the pages of well-known consumer magazines, such as
Better Homes & Gardens, Paint Decor and Romantic Homes.
Consumer coverage also is expected for |
 |
this year's project, and
there is even the possibility that the project will be the subject of a
television show.
Last year's project was part
of a major restoration at Fair Havens, an antebellum home. Major
transformations occurred, courtesy of decorative painting artistry, in
such rooms as the parlor, dining room and grand foyer.
Registrations for the class
will be continued throughout the project. Hands-on classes last from
Monday through Friday, with seminars on Saturday. For more information,
